What do you do? Czym się zajmujesz?

 

Hi Friends! 

We all have or will have a job (well, at least majority of us), so it would be useful to get to know how to talk about our most beloved profession in Polish. I believe that we should do as many things we are passionate about as we possibly can and if it happens that our occupation coresponds with our dreams - then there's nothing better under the sun!

First, let's grasp some vocabulary:

Zawód - profession

Praca - job/ work

Zajęcie - occupation

Czym się zajmujesz? - What do you do?

Kim jesteś z zawodu? - What is your profession?

Czym Pan/Pani się zajmuje? - What do you do Sir/Madam?

Kim Pan/Pani jest z zawodu? - What is your profession Sir/Madam?

Here we've got a list of a few professions:

Lekarz - doctor

Nauczyciel - teacher

Aptekarz - pharmacist

Murarz - mason

Hydraulik - plumber

Sprzedawca - salesman

If you want to answer the above questions you may say:

Jestem (I am ) + zawód (job) + "-em", "-iem" or "ą" (Instrumental Case)

For example:

Jestem lekarzem - I am a doctor.

Jestem nauczycielem - I am a teacher.

Jestem aptekarzem - I am a pharmacist.

Jestem murarzem - I am a mason.

Jestem hydraulikiem - I am a plumber.

Jestem sprzedawcą - I am a salesman

A short reading exercise:

Jest ciepły jesienny dzień. Marek wyszedł na spacer. Niedaleko rynku spotyka starego przyjaciela ze szkoły.

- Kopę lat, stary! - woła Marek

- Miło cię widzieć, Zdzichu! Co u ciebie? Czym się zajmujesz?

- Wszystko dobrze. Jestem hydraulikiem w Irlandii, właśnie zjechałem na parę dni. A czym ty się zajmujesz?

- Jestem sprzedawcą w Biedronce.

- O rety!

- No co?!

Comprehension questions:

1. Marek is happy to see Zdzichu:

ciepły - warm

jesienny - autumnal

dzień - day

wyszedł - he went out/ wyjść - go out

na spacer - for a walk

niedaleko - nearby

rynek - market square

spotyka - he met/ spotkać - to meet

stary - old

przyjaciel - friend 

ze szkoły - from school

Kopę lat, stary! - Long time no see, mate!

woła - he exclaims/ wołać - to exclaim

Miło cię widzieć! - Nice to see you!

Co u Ciebie? - How do you do?

Wszystko - all

Dobrze - good

w Irlandii - in Ireland/ Irlandia - Ireland

właśnie - just

zjechałem - I came back

na parę - for couple of

o rety! - oh, boy!

no co?! - so what?!
